The Fight for Flinders Chase
The value of Flinders Chase National Park extends beyond mere dollars and cents. It is wild, it protects a multitude of plant, animal and fungal species, and it renews the spirit and soul on every visit.
Yet, these days value seems to be measured only in money – the money the chase brings into the island economy, and what it costs to keep the tourists coming. There is also a cost in protecting the chase while welcoming visitors.
The Kangaroo Island Friends of Parks and Eco-Action coalition is having to ask for your support in cold hard cash to ensure the value of the chase is preserved. Our efforts to get the SA government and Australian Walking Company to compromise and move their luxury developments away from the fragile coast and ‘back on the track’ have come to nought.
We have thus lodged papers in SA Supreme Court for judicial review of the planning and vegetation clearance decisions that have allowed this project to be approved. Our case will be heard by the Full Bench of the SA Supreme Court in the first week of February 2020. We are raising funds to help pay for our legal costs.
Our Chuffed crowdfunding campaign closed on October 16, the centenary of Flinders Chase being declared as a flora and fauna reserve , raising over $57,000. Thank you to everyone who contributed.
You can still contribute to support the future of Flinders Chase National Park, by direct deposit to Kangaroo Island Eco-Action. Whether you can spare some small change or a small fortune, every single donation is of value to the cause.
